Exploring Kasséré: A Hidden Gem in Côte d’Ivoire

Exploring Kasséré: A Hidden Gem in Côte d’Ivoire

Some may say that the true magic of travel lies not in the destination, but in the journey itself and the many connections you make along the way. My recent escapade to Kasséré, a quaint town nestled in the heart of Côte d’Ivoire, was a testament to this traditional wisdom.

I was drawn to Kasséré’s cultural richness, much like a moth to a flickering flame. Its rustic charm, coupled with my love for unraveled treasures, felt like coming home in a foreign land.

Walking through Fear: Getting Lost in Kasséré

Every seasoned traveller has their kryptonite, and mine happens to be getting lost in a new city. As much as I find it thrilling, the other side of the coin, anxiety, often co-exists. Try as I might, Kasséré’s winding labyrinthine streets, much like Dublin’s, had me disoriented in no time. I was alone in a foreign town with barely passable French and some basic Japanese that, let’s be honest, wouldn’t do much for me here. My vintage compass, my trusted confidant on such occasions, decided to play its tricks and cease to cooperate at this crucial juncture.

The Silver Lining: Crossing Paths with Kouao

Caught in this web of anxiety and fascination, I found Kouao, who emerged as an unanticipated compass in human form. He carried a light in his eyes that rivaled the Ivory Coast’s brilliant sunsets. The embodiment of Kasséré’s friendly spirit, Kouao, a local craftsman, led me through the town’s maze and straight into its heart. Not in the mood for the usual tourist traps, his local insider tips were a godsend.

He mentioned that many tourists never get to experience Kasséré’s local charm fully because they surge towards the popular attractions. Instead, he suggested taking a refreshing detour through the town’s lesser-known spot, the ‘zero attraction’ – a local alley filled with vibrant art murals narrating the town’s rich history.

Seeing Kasséré Through Local Eyes

The restaurant ‘0’, aptly named for its hard-to-find location tucked away on an inconspicuous lane, was Kouao’s next recommendation. True to his word, it wasn’t the grandeur but the simplicity of Restaurant 0 that enticed me. Compared to the typical sushi and Irish stews I usually crave, the delightful local cuisine, teeming with home-grown flavours, was a fitting departure from the norm. I left feeling a part of Kasséré, one stew and rustic dessert at a time.

Sage Advice for Future Kasséré Adventurers

If you plan on visiting Kasséré, do yourself a favour and steer clear from the conventional itinerary. Much like I paint my watercolours, let the town colour itself onto your canvas, stroke by improvised stroke. Seek meaningful connections; they’ll guide you to the authentic local experiences Kasséré has to offer. Above all, embrace the maze. Wander and get lost. And remember, even if your compass fails, Kasséré and its people will not.

My travel to Kasséré reiterated that every destination carries a rhythm of its own. The challenge, my dear wanderlust-filled souls, is not to master the rhythm but to sync your own heartbeat with it. Kasséré did that for me, urging me to venture beyond, to explore and lose myself only to find comfort in the unexpected. It served as a beautiful reminder that overcoming fears often unveils the most extraordinary treasures on our journeys, much like my treasured Kasséré coffee mug that sits proudly with the others on my shelf today. After all, isn’t that what adventure is all about?
