Discovering Durbuy: A Quaint Belgian Surprise

Discovering Durbuy: A Quaint Belgian Surprise

I wasn’t quite sure what to expect as I stepped off the train, having journeyed through the scenic countryside into the heart of Durbuy, Belgium’s reputed smallest city. The air smelled of damp stone, fresh pastries, and a hint of something herbal which I later found was from the quaint kitchen gardens scattered across the city. I will admit, my unacquaintedness with the city made me hesitate a bit, but hey, what’s a travel adventure without a little uncertainty, right?

Encounter with a Local Gem

Having settled into my Airbnb, a charming cottage with a blooming garden and a sweeping view of the ruins of the old castle, I set out for exploration when I stumbled upon a small antique shop. There, I made the acquaintance of Jacques, a Durbuy local, his eyes twinkling with wisdom and humour. Over a generous cup of locally brewed coffee served in a mug so quirky it had to accompany me home, he spilled the secrets of his beloved town. It was during this conversation that I realized how conversations with locals can completely transform your travel experiences.

Daring at the Funtrail Durbuy

Following Jacques’ advice, I decided to visit the Funtrail Durbuy, a unique treetop adventure park nestled amidst leafy woods. My heart pounded in anticipation, as this was a far cry from my usual serene photography walks. But equipped with my DSLR, an adventurer’s spirit, and in a peculiar but exciting twist, my Morse code knowledge (they used Morse code for communication!), I tackled the courses. I confess, I wasn’t a natural, but the experience was exhilarating, increasingly so when I captured some fantastic birds-eye view shots of Durbuy’s beautiful landscapes.

Local Flavours at Le Bouchon-bouchon

After the thrill of Funtrail, a hearty meal was in order. So, I headed to Le Bouchon-bouchon, a recommendation from Jacques. I was not, to put it mildly, a fan of spicy food, and I was hopeful (and a tad anxious) about trying the local Belgian cuisine. To my pleasant surprise, the restaurant enchanted with its rustic decor and the culinary delights it offered. The duck confit was incredibly flavorful, subtly seasoned and was a perfect match with the tangy local beer. It was a gastronomic adventure, and I must say, the pastries were to die for!

Transforming Through Travel

Though initially intimidated by my lack of familiarity with Durbuy and its culture, this unlikely city presented not only incredible hidden gems but also an opportunity to push beyond my comfort zone — a reminder of why I fell in love with travel in the first place.

Travel Tips for Your Durbuy Adventure

An essential piece of advice to anyone visiting Durbuy is to connect with the locals. They know the heart and soul of the city, and their insights would make your trip that much more enriching. Also, quite practically, bring sensible footwear! The town’s cobblestone streets are charming until they’re not so friendly to your feet!

Reflecting upon my journey, I realize that Durbuy resonated deeply with me. Much like my personality, the city was a mix of calm charm and unanticipated thrills. And though I may have begun in a place of mild discomfort and uncertainty, Durbuy opened doors to unique experiences, from adrenaline-pumping adventure courses to heartwarming encounters. This Belgian city might be small, but it is brimming with personality waiting to be discovered, just like a good cup of coffee. Looking forward to pouring more such experiences into my travel mug! Until the next adventure, friends!
